FREE TO BE YOU AND ME®
Original, romantic Arkansas poetry dedicated to my
wonderful, compassionate husband, Steve.
By Donna J. Fennel on this 15th day of May, 2003.
Revised especially for you on June 1, 2006.
This is meant to mirror our enduring life together.
The years matter more to me, now ~
I reminisce upon our good old days
While time brings my mind around ~
Which never does it cease to amaze.
O, I could outlast an eon of years ~
Without fleeting motion or a sound.
Neither morose feelings nor tears ~
Elated, knowing that you’ll be around.
Alas, I wish I could be someone else ~
Just for now, perhaps even yourself.
Pray we not witness impending hell ~
As either alone, for only time will tell.
Just take my hand, knowing I am here ~
I’ll cross the sands of time for your love.
We are fated to be forever together, dear ~
For our blessed eternity foretold to come.
The winds and tides, ere changing times ~
Our storms will subside, like oceanic tide
Upon wings of an ivory dove, rise above ~
And never grow weary of my tender love.
Turbulent tempests shall, indeed, dissipate ~
Yet I shall bless you what I hold most dear:
My heart and faithfulness to appreciate ~
Along these winding mountain paths near.
Where azure sky meets acres of virgin land ~
And our day-to-day routine is never planned.
The folks here laugh just ‘cause they’re living ~
For with joy they employ true spirit of giving.
Tho tempests will blow through raging snow ~
Know in my heart and my life you will never go.
For if woeful, wandering wind knocks me down ~
You, Steve, will impound, abound and surround.
Love, you have lived Lazarus life of solitude ~
So pacifistic in demeanor, yet when you speak
Crooning choicest words, your voice is heard ~
And a marveled message from one not so meek.
As life now paints a palette of indigo and gray ~
Let us look upon our new horizon on a fair day
With eyes that realize tranquility in our souls ~
Mirrored by our hills, sketched with daffodils.
Our future is unsure, yet our past is set in stone ~
This present we revere in, despite life’s erratic tone.
Not meant to know all, for much is still unknown ~
We are more than pawns in time; destiny is our own.
All that was wrong in life before, we now ignore ~
While billowy clouds cradle, as thunder rolls away
Over our horizon, now, feel warmth of His heart ~
See the Light of the Son? The dawn of a new day.
Sweetheart, reflected in my eyes of glen green ~
Are scintillating sparkles of you in my dreams.
Amber plains of grain against a forest serene ~
As God creates the ultimate view in this scene.
Take a step to what’s real that we're now chasing ~
In life, for this new gift is here for our embracing.
His Hope that lights the world becomes unfurled ~
Brimming in our married souls to make us whole.
There’s a myriad of my mind that forever tries ~
To fathom the stars in gorgeous Arkansas skies.
Yet, I need not gaze at the constellations above~
For the light shining in your eyes is Heaven, love.
How well I know this life transition does portend ~
A new start we will impart towards wondrous end.
So sought after, is this overture to life’s chapter ~
To deem this Arkansas scene is truly forever after.
While we embrace a balmy a morning breeze ~
Upon a beckoning balcony facing a scene serene
As creamiest of clouds abound and surround ~
O, my love for you endures like a lucid dream.
In this wonderland of wilderness warm and clean ~
We forge our fresh start 'midst Arkansas scene.
God’s gift to we two, as we start our life anew ~
In this lair so fair, we are free to be you and me.
