ODE TO THE EVERGREEN ®
Original, honorary winter’s day poetry by Donna J. Fennel.

O, elegant evergreen, you are perpetual in your beauty ~
As you brighten every Christmas holiday to help me cope.
While enduring changing seasons is your dubious duty ~
You eternally bestow rejuvenation to my soul and hope.
Through each renaissance of the ancient winter solstice ~
You remain evermore obedient to us in your faithfulness.
My dad died during Yuletide, and as I wipe away the tears ~
Your agelessness instills me to brave on a thousand years!
And when my harbors seem distant, somehow you do renew ~
As you welcome my spring times, witnessing kiss of first dew.
And yet you always thrived through every vestige of my life ~
For you know how to coddle me when my heart be full of woe.
Before Christ died, He wore a crown of thorns upon His head ~
We hoped that He would have worn your living wreath, instead.
Ah, the Druids worshipped and adorned you with decorations ~
For you reign as their master, was their religious proclamation.
And yet in peace you are still, gracefully swaying in the breeze ~
While your scent rejuvenates my spirit, bringing me to my knees.
O, you are everlasting in your sustenance, surviving tempests ~
And so perennial, while you watch flora draw their final breath.
As season swoons, while opal moon returns sheaves a thousand fold ~
Aloofly abandoning her stubble of land earth’s history once foretold.
Widow winter wishes to weave white wonder on waiting windowsill ~
While Mother Nature draws dying whisper, executing her final will.
She is weary from her summer toil, now building powdery parapet ~
‘Midst this woodland scene serene, squired by her dear sire evergreen.
Whence leaves fall ‘pon sleeping eves of yonder dwell I know so well ~
Your snow-dusted frond is mirrored by frozen pond in alluring spell.
Realize that the blueprint for every lifetime yields lessons to learn ~
And spurn occasionally this is true, while longing to forever grow.
Ah, for another chance at life? Well, I think not, although I yearn ~
While whispering winds of change turn, and my soul like yours we tow.
How my precious mother prayed that I move to promised land someday ~
So like her precipitous Pennsylvania home, where she yearned to return.
Wherein her panoramic view pristine included you, precious evergreen ~
For Heavenly Spirit and she thrives within me, as my poetic passions burn.
O, sing now sonnet of this season, ‘midst vestibule of evergreens galore ~
Our promised land etched from primordial sand, designed by One Divine.
This spiritual sanctuary abandoned by Indians from their days of yore ~
Where evergreen rules supreme at my door, yearning for nothing more.
You reign as my woodland king, while newborn saplings you shroud ~
Now donning your valiant velvet cloak, your stance purveyed is proud.
When you weep, sap oozes from your trembling trunk and branches ~
How I cry alongside you for I, too, along life’s road have taken chances.
More constant than change, may you last eternally and ever endure ~
While mankind seeks peace of mind, and his heart be nurtured pure.
May you flourish and stay nourished, while by all you are seen ~
And admired so my noble Sire, for you are my sovereign evergreen.
