LIGHTS FOREVER TURNING GREEN®
Original, reflective poetic lessons by Donna J. Fennel.
Quilled on this 20th day of March, 2005 by my fireside.
Revised by dawn's early light for you on April 9, 2006.
This is truly one of my favorite original poems to date.
Tribute to my husband, Steve, a top executive of Florida's
Right Of Way Administration for thirty-eight great years.
Envision, if you will, a visible road ahead ~
While we journey from this homestead.
And may our lights forever signal green ~
For sights yet unseen of Arkansas scene.
Not a definite destination diagram on a map ~
Just ahead is a road where convoluted bends
Open vistas beckoning beyond the horizon ~
Revealing elaborate paths the Lord sends.
And crossroads we do wish for you, too ~
That you may discover His Divine direction.
Allow a detour for fun, as curiosity’s spun ~
Do steal a moment to pause for reflection.
Pray a passing lane or two will get us by ~
Witness those who appear to lead the pack.
But in reality are so lost, at greatest cost ~
On their course of life’s forgotten track.
Let traffic speed past time’s merciless cast ~
Yet, let it not bottleneck too close behind.
In the rearview mirror, all seems clearer ~
But cross not life’s double yellow line.
Oh, the breathtaking view we have traveled ~
While life’s jalopies of journeys are unraveled.
At the same, borrow opportunity to savor ~
Scenes and dreams while these paths quaver.
Wallow in these hours during dismal showers ~
Pelting tears along life’s roadside as you glide.
Witness gleaming lakes, yet do not forsake ~
Your safety, lest you end up on a fatal ride.
Now, if you do need to stop and turn around ~
Take note of the precious treasures that abound.
The diminutive dancing flowers and grand trees ~
Along this road inevitably covering 360 degrees.
Know where you have yet to go, and travel slow ~
Watch out for boulders, wish for ample shoulders.
Be careful, dear friends, lest you enter a dead end ~
Make sure to view God’s miracles around the bend.
Proceed not in the wrong direction, and take a rest ~
Along this winding quest, for the road is distressed
With potholes and pavement crying for major repair.
For lurking within this lair is a network of despair.
View undulating ebbs and tides of life while you ride ~
Your winged chariot, or noble steed with gilded lariat.
Go now full throttle, drink not libations from a bottle.
Accept this new scene, for lights are not always green.
And seize that which does not come at you straight on ~
But from the side, obliquely, as you travel this course.
For the Heavenly Father does not rule with brute force ~
Learn through His Divine Love that you, son, have won.
On that final ride, may your passenger seat be retreat ~
For those near and dear to you who help you navigate
While you continue this sojourn; perhaps you will learn ~
As you tune the radio, to drive slow and life appreciate.
