"The road to Hell is paved with good intentions." John Ray (1670)
RIVERWORLD OF THE DAMNED® Original fantasy poetry by Donna J. Fennel.
Quilled on this 21st day of March, 2004 ~
A dark, dismal and distant shore to explore.
Revised adding more demise on May 10, 2006.
From Riverworld, I return to rubble ~
‘Neath ocean hubble, cast in bubble.
Tho I now die, I shall be again reborn ~
To face tribal scorn of all life forms.
How curious this sunlight behaves ~
Reflecting on dark and dancing waves.
Alas, how my mortal being truly craves ~
A view from above these watery graves.
Now suspended in my aquatic lair ~
I do not gasp for air in bubble glow.
Alas, I am no longer human there ~
’Neath a tempestuous and torrid flow.
'Tis peaceful there, but I have found ~
I still can hear the sardonic sound
Of voices of the souls who drowned ~
And left their loved ones to mourn.
The lonely wails transmit the pain ~
Of those who just could not remain
So journeyed to the unknown plane ~
Of dead souls and those yet unborn.
But in this world, there verily exist ~
Those survivors who shall always miss
The passion found from a lover's kiss ~
That sequestered them night and day.
Tho here, cast into my storms of sea ~
My heart bleeds a baleful tragedy
For I do have someone dear to me ~
Who has not passed away, you see.
O, will there be moonlight tonight ~
While I gather frail seagull feathers?
’Midst these dismal, doomed depths ~
Shall I discover troves of treasures?
Lo, I now view above sinister sea ~
A rainbow arisen from a rolling rain
While enchanting tunes of sirens croon ~
Their angst, witnessing mortal pain.
Now comes a being in Reaper shroud ~
To abscond me from this bubbled lair.
As I ascend, I view a lone gray cloud ~
Much like me, as we two gasp for air.
I am what is, yet what is not eternal ~
Flesh to once more be cast into inferno.
Sorrowed soul who now longs to live ~
Nay, Riverworld’s rue I shant forgive.
Riverworld is a ravaged realm, ere true ~
Nay, I could not bear the thought of you
Trapped 'neath this ominous ocean blue ~
And deprived of your final mortal breath.
Nonesuch harm to you would I condone ~
For I shall be abandoned here, on my own
To face a wretched, woeful world alone.
Alas, ‘tis mine fate far worse than death.
Yes, I shall again return to this purgatory ~
Known as Riverworld, such an allegory
That actually exists as a decadent domain ~
Where souls share pain, again and again ...
"There exists a realm in the astral plane ~
Where soft night is born, and sunset dies.
Farthest shores see faint tides fade away ~
Mortal utopia of laughter, tears and sighs."
